Only a Monkey Could Top Spock's Fan Mail

In this clipping it says only the Monkeys pulled in more fan mail than Star Trek and that a good chunk of it was attributed to Spock/Leonard Nimoy. Here are few more entries that in some way mention Leonard Nimoy.

Even Isaac Asimov thought a little screaming was ok when Leonard Nimoy's in the house.

Limited Range? (1973)

In The Monster Times special issue from 1973, Star Trek Lives, the author describes Leonard Nimoy's performance thus:

On the other hand, Leonard Nimoy as Spock is an actor of only limited range, well suited to this particular role but incapable of more demanding ones.

Given Mr. Nimoy's illustrious career, that's hilarious to read. Even more hilarious is his evaluation of DeFrorest Kelley's acting abilities and praise of Mr. Shatner in contrast, who's portrayal of Kirk has given fodder to countless parodies. Go to My Star Trek Scrapbook November 1st entry for the full article. The part quoted from is on page 5. (Thank you, Jackie, for the find.)

At last, they've come to their senses after all.

Gene Roddenberry's Original Pitch for Star Trek, 1964

In this document Gene Roddenberry outlines what Star Trek is, who the characters are, and what possible strories can be told. The captain, then, was Robert April and the ship named the Yorktown. Spock is not quite the man we've come to know, but the seeds are there. Found by Grace. Many thanks.

The First Lieutenant

The captain's right-hand man, the working level commander of all the ship's functions from manning the bridge to supervising the lowliest scrub detail. His name is "Mr. Spock." And the first view of him can be almost frightening – a face so heavy-lidded and satanic you might almost expect him to have a forked tail. Probably half Martian, he has a slightly reddish complexion and semi-pointed ears. But strangely – Mr- Spock's quiet temperament is in dramatic contrast to his satanic look. Of all the crew aboard, he is the nearest to Captain April's equal, physically and emotionally, as a commander of men. His primary weakness is an almost cat-like curiosity over anything the slightes "alien".

Star Trek: The Original Series 365

It's a book full of anecdotes, information and pictures for each day of the year. Some are well worn, others have been rarely seen or heard, or might even be brand new to even a long time fan of the series. It was written by long time fan Paula M. Block, who went on to work at the licensing department of Paramount Pictures, as a "celebration of the Original Series", with a foreword by D.C. Fontana. Since I don't think I'd bought it on my own, many, many thanks go to Heiko, who thought it would make the perfect birthday gift. It brought back lots of memories of discovering Star Trek and fandom more than 20 years ago. Paula M. Block writes her hope was

that this book will evoke in you a bit of the same excitement that colors my personal Star Trek memories. Then you'll understand why so many people, geeks and non-geeks alike, were drawn to the program decades ago, and why so many people lined up at the theaters in May 2009 when the newest Star Trek movie opened.

Skeptical at first that it would tell me anything that I didn't already know, I found it became not so much about facts but about the journey that took me into fandom and had me stay a fan for all those years. Mission accomplished, I'd say. If you're looking for a Christmas present for a Star Trek fan, or need to give your loved ones a hint what to get you, Star Trek: The Original Series 365 would make a nice addition to anyone's collection.

TOS in Germany

The digitally remastered Original Series comes to German public TV at ZDFneo and their promotion department had a bit of fun with it. (If the embedded video doesn't work, try this.)

Don't you know it? Washed out colors after beaming just once!

Kirk to McCoy: "Can you explain how that's possible?"

McCoy: "Sorry, can't."

Commercial (Starfleet shirts blowing gently in the wind on washing line.) Enough of that. Vibrant colors from now on thanks to cutting edge digital technology

Spock: "Fascinating."

The original. Starship Enterprise. Digitally brushed up. Starting February 28th. Only on ZDFneo.

The Girls on Film

At the beginning of the year the group uploaded their rendition of the "recruiting" scene between Kirk (Chris Pine) and Pike (Bruce Greenwood) at the bar close to the Starfleet shipyards in Iowa from the 2009 movie Star Trek. While Spock is not part of the setup, an appearance by "her" is announced in the future. So stay tuned.

Hi
THought you might enjoy the latest episode of our web series: we recreate a scene from the 2009 Star Trek movie (We don't have Spock in it, but we plan on having a Spock episode in the future!

We'd love some feedback if you have the chance: like, comment or subscribe!

Cheers!

The Girls on Film

My apologies to Katerina Taxia who plays Pike, but that voice of Bruce Greenwood is forever locked in my mind. I'm looking forward to seeing their version of Spock, though. While what The Girls on Film does is substitute actresses for actors in the scene, it helps put a finger on what Star Trek has often been lacking. Female lead characters that are more than a tight costume filled in a shapely manner. (After all, we dig Spock for his brains, right...right??)

If you'd like to know more about The Girls on Film and their other projects please visit their page or Trek Movie, which has a short Q&A where you learn why TGON got started or why Star Trek and this particular moment in the film were chosen for the newest entry.

Flipping the genders reflects our collective quirkiness; we want to have fun with our work! Additionally, we want to give our viewers a fresh reason to tune into our episodes. Go online and you can see tons of movie recreations people have filmed on handi-cams in their basements, so lets approach the recreation thing from a new angle: what would a female Kirk be like? I wonder, if Pike was a woman, would she be bitchy or motherly?
